i think so...ecspecially if they dislike you for no reason. it's eating them up. you can go to sleep at night knowing you tried and they are still stressing about something stupid!

One should always be nice to people, even when the act is not returned in kind. You don't know if the person is not nice due their disposition, something that occurred in their life, or some other situation. If you respond in kind, you only justify their behavior. To behave kindly might inspire them to change their ways. Someone else may bring to their attention how inappropriate their actions were. Many times a person who acts badly, but knows better will return to the offend person to apologize for their actions. Others may not see the other person's rude behavior and only see your response to it. In their eyes, you would be the rude person.
It comes down to respect. Even if you are not respected back, you can show respect for others. In the long run, you will have your respect by others who see how you treat people. You don't have to like everyone and you probably won't, but you can still remain civil. Being nice doesn't also mean that you cannot inform someone when they are rude to you. You can call someone on their actions and still be nice about it.

Being nice to people doesn't cost you anything. Not being nice costs you in terms of negative energy and thinking that you've not been nice. That's a cost.
And, there's Karma. What goes around comes around. It may not be this lifetime or the next or the next hundred, but it will come around.

Yes it is. Be happy and treat people the way you want to be treated. If they don't respond the same way, that's their problem, not yours. Don't live your life based on how others treat you, be the bigger person and do what makes you feel good about yourself.
