Used to be mainly Latin with quite a bit of Greek thrown in. As the discoverers of an animal get to give it its 'scientific' name they're now in a variety of languages, including English.

Not only of animals, the scientific name of plants also is written in latin. Because its a dead language i.e. no further modifications will be made in it. When printed, they have to be written in italics, & when handwritten, they have to be underlined seperately. Scientific name consists of two parts- Generic name & Specific epithet. The generic name gives the name of the genus & specific epithet gives the name of the specie.

It is LATIN
According to Binomial Nomenclature introduced by Gaspard Bauhin(though initially found out by Linnaues), the scientific name is written in Greek in 2 parts.."Bi" means "2" and "nomos" means "names"..the first name is the generic name and the second name is the specific name... Scientific names given to any newly discovered organism in lang other than LATIN r nt accepted by ICBN / ICZN...
