After the cord falls off, 3 times a week is fine. If they get to many baths their skin will dry out, no matter how much lotion you put on them. The days you do not give them a bath, wash them off with a washrag, especially their private areas and their neck and face.

They should show you how to properly sponge bathe your baby while you are still in the hospital and give instructions as to when you can start full proper baths. This is generally after the umbilical stump falls off and circumcision (if applicable) is healed. Until then, sponge bathe daily, use rubbing alcohol applied with a q-tip or cotton ball to umbilical area, and follow instructions for circumcision.

As far as the bathing goes, done properly you can bathe your baby every day, as part of a daily routine. I say properly, meaning to use lotion from the neck down, excluding genitalia. You can use creamy baby oil on the head for cradle cap if needed, or lavender baby oil to soothe a cranky baby. Use baby shampoo for hair only, and baby bath can be used for either hair or body. The only thing that should be used on baby's face is water; no lotions, oil, or soap. Their skin is too sensitive at this point and they can cause eye or skin irritation, even if it's rinsed well. Baby wipes used on the face can also cause irritation. Wet baby washcloths can be used during the day to clean up messes, short of extra gentle baby wipes used for bowel movements. (I personally prefer Huggie's Shea Butter baby wipes. They are not harsh at all and clean very well. My youngest is almost 4 and I still keep them on hand for dirty faces and trips to the potty)

I hope this helps...Blessings

People generally give their baby a little bath in a little tub every morning (after a night of sleeping in a diaper that got wet).

Other than that, you wash what's necessary: If the baby gets spit-up on his face and neck you wash that. If he dirties his diapers you wash that area. I used to keep a basin on the changing table, and a diaper was particularly dirty I'd just dip their bottom. If that didn't seem necessary I'd dip the baby wipe in the basin instead and clean them with that.

Its possible you could wash too much moisture out of their skin, so you do have to be careful about what you use to wash them.

You can sponge bath as soon as they get home, i think they even give them on in the hospital. Then you can give them a bath in a baby tub after their cord falls off.

You're supposed to sponge-bathe them until the umbillical cord falls of (usually 8-10 days) and then you can bathe them as often as you'd like--they love it!
