Well, think about let's say Snow White. Wasn't her life so difficult only because she was prettier then her stepmom? Or if we just think about nature, aren't beautiful flowers die because they are always torn out to put in a vase? Aren't pretty trees cut out to be made a table out of? Isn't it better to be the ugliest flower and live happily until natural death? Isn't this true to humans also? Why is there so much pressure on naturally beautiful women and where is it coming from? I'm interested in your opinion in general and also concerning literature if you have any ideas. I'm doing a research in literature focusing on Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary and I'm trying to show that their lives became so tragedic only because they were too beautiful. I'm amazed how many times this theme occurs in literature. Do you have further examples? I'd appretiate good sources and any kind of help :)

A beautiful woman's life is much harder?

What are you kidding me? Get a grip on reality and look at where the not so beautiful women are at in thier lives and then tell me.

Good lord I wish this whole Celebrity/Beauty Crap would go away already!

So what you're trying to say is that because most animals are that way, and we humans are also animals, we probably are that way, too. But the way in which we are most different to other animals is in the way we think. Other animals have more simpler ways of thinking. Birds who are better at dancing or showing off their feathers aren't necessary going to be a better mate for the female, but the females still judge by these things because that's how they've been programmed to instinctively do. Humans on the other hand can think in a more logical way. The sexual attraction is always gonna be there, but there are other things women are going to be looking for, now and in the Stone Ages. So I don't think there is a logical reason why the men must be more beautiful and sexier than women. Besides, because of this way of thinking humans have, the idea of what's beautiful and sexually attractive changes with time and depending on the person.

Snow White's life was tragic because she made bad choices. She could have chosen to solidify her position as the sole heir of the throne by educating herself and allying herself with power members of the court. Her story along with Cinderella, the Little Mermaid etc showed only the ideals of women of that period in time. Even as a child reading the Little Mermaid (the real version where she dies and gets turned in to a air spirit), I always thought it was wrong that she was so timid and never made a real try for her prince. Look at what the moral of that story seems to say: she was wrong to have loved something different. She died after he rejected his beautiful and loyal companion (her) for some foreign princess. He was pretty dumb too.

Beauty was effeminate = useless and empty. Some time in the past few centuries, beauty was reassigned to only women. Men used to be the more colorful, in clothing, toiletry, accessories but some how it has become only an attribute of women and only the shallow, ditsy version.

Beauty is a gift just like athletics & brains but for some reason people are too blind or too scared to admit that. There is nothing wrong with a person perfecting a sport and earning millions and receiving accolades and fame so why is it wrong for a beautiful woman (or man) to do the same based on their looks? Just llike looks, some talents fade over time, but instead of encouraging beautiful women to use what they have, they are made to be ashamed of it. People who tell their children that beauty is only skin deep should really think about what they are saying. Of course it's skin deep. And mostly they say it because they are not beautiful or their child isn't. How come they don't say, brains are only in your head? Or put down good athletes?

As for how many time this occurs in literature and the common theme of how beauty became the ruin of someone, maybe if we read a little deeper, the author is really saying that it's one dimensionedness and bad choices that is the real hubris. Just look at Hamlet.

I think that life doesn't give you more burden than what you are able to carry. Yes some beautiful woman don't know how to cope with their attractive image. Yet some others do (for instance, Audrey Hepburn, Cleopatra and hum Martha Stewart). I don't think you can generalize... And if you think that ugly is easier, please remember what it can be like to be a midget or a lepper (and no, it's not that uncommon).
And, by the way, I read the novel twice, and I don't remember that Emma Bovary was THAT beautiful. She sure must have been prettier than the average, but I really don't think she was exceptionnaly good looking. Otherwise she probably could have afforded to marry a richer and less provincial man than her small-town doctor.

Now don't hear what I am not saying, hear the music. In
our world there is one line of confusing digressive, aggressive
and heathen pursuit. Alcohol, abuse, drugs, cheats. This is
the model of women will be in protection. When. The real fact
is so much of our lives is prerecorded, like God is an android.
Where women are hurt is a traditional study of the greatest
husbands, and dieties. Beauty is somewhat universal, fare,
lite, smooth, hefty shapely. This area has a new problem,
genetic freaks, making production into cartoonery. To have the
basics needs to have economic fareness. Today women need
protection from futuristics that are all cosmetic, all steel, all
super lunch. Women's responsibilities are in their heart and
shortees can tell you they are bigger then men, and smarter.

I don't think that a beautiful woman's life is harder just because she is beautiful.

Every person and every group of people have their own unique problems that they have to deal with every day.

In the case of a beautiful woman, many diverse opportunities are also available to her just because she is beautiful. For example, she gets first dibs on dating the high school quarterback.

I must point out that your concept that ugly people live happier lives because they are ugly is ridiculous.

The concept of beauty is a double edged sword. Beauty can bring opportunities but can also restrict emotional and intellectual growth.

I think that great literary works focus more on the combination of great beauty juxtaposed with negative attributes which can result in tragic consequences. It's not the beauty per se, but the misuse of it.

Marilyn Monroe is a prime example of a beautiful woman whose life was made exceptionally 'heckish' by the Kennedy brothers, Johnny and Bobby. I think it's a fascinating story. Google it sometime. Put their names together and see what happens.

i think i agree. a beutiful woman must always live with the fact that she has people to impress. if one single flaw is ever detected, then there goes her reputation. she must also always live with the fact that she is envied. in some cases this can be a good thing. but in other cases, think about it...would u want to be friends with someone that u wish u were, someone better than you? i wouldnt. i would detest them and wish them the worst. its also possible that u cud look up to them, but thats also not really friendship...more like a master/servent kinda relatioship.
