Ben Franklin started referring to the colonists as Americans during the revolutionary war to give them a national identity. They had Georgians, Carolinans, Pennsylvanians....etc, but no common name. So blame ol Ben.

Any one in North, Central or South America can call themselves Americans, because they are residents of the Continents named America. However, America is part of the official Name of the U.S. of America, the only one with America in its title. It is unique in the Americas in that it is not a single word place name such as Canada, Brazil, or Panama, but more of the name of abstract idea.

The continent of America only consists of; North America (Canada), America (the United States) Central America and South America (beginning with Mexico and down to the tip of south America).
North America consists of Proveniences, America consists of States, Central and South America consists of countries (like Europe).
America (the United States) is the only one which has ONE universal language - English. North America, Canada, speaks numerous languages - including French. Central and South America speak a language special to each country.
I hope this helps.

It is very common to shorten formal names. Nicknames, first names, surnames...all are commonly used informally. Similarly, the formal name for the nation is "The United States of America."

All other names, including USA, US, and America are common, unofficial, and informal names that are clearly derived from the full, legal, formal name.

If you are John Thomas Smith, and friends call you "Smith", the meaning is clear, even though "Smith" is a family name including millions of people. No one is implying that Smith means *all* Smiths in all places.

Why is that such a mystery?
