I had trouble figuring that out too when I got my phone haha. Yes the little button on the side with the picture of the red phone would be the on and off button. You have to hold it for a fre seconds.

hold down the off button.
I felt like an idiot and had to go into the store to ask them why my phone didn't work (I didn't get a book), and they treated me like such a NOVICE)
