Assuming you aren't stacking people vertically, you would need the square footage that each person requires. Divide that into the total square footage to get the number of people.

Obviously it is a lot more involved than that when you consider fire safety, personal comfort, resources, structural load of the floor, etc.

Sounds like you've got some research ahead of you... however it could turn out to be a fun project, especially if you get some friends involved in squishing into the smallest square footage possible, and then asking them to give you answers about personal comfort space, etc. You could see if there are cultural biases too. Perhaps certain cultures are used to being closer while others expect more "personal space".

Depends on "How much space is required for one person." Once you know this you can divide that into the square footage for the room size you have, the answer will tell you how many persons can fit in that room without moving around.

If it takes 1.5 sq ft per person, and i have 312 sq ft room

312/1.5 = 208 people, for example, but i'd give them more room than what i have...hahahahaha

besides the mathematical packing problem, you should look at building codes in various cities, states, etc. This limits the "occupancy" of rooms for different types of functions (assembly, sitting, etc). These are safety concerns, but seem to be part of your topic.
