The easiest way is to put files and folders in places no one would guess, like windows system files. Other than that you can buy programs to password protect your items, but thats only a stopgap, if they know its there, you already lost the battle.

Windows XP doesn't have password protection built in, but you can hide files.....there is an option to do so without downloading anything, but you need to remember the file name. If you hide it (and there are many documents in the file) Do nooot hide all of the documents inside the file, unless you are prepared to remember the file path to each. To retrieve your hidden files, go to the location of the file (it will not appear to be there) and then type /*file name* in the address bar. I don't know how much you do with computers, but you may find it easier to just download a program.

Well ,you can make an account in the PC with password so that no body access it without you .Other users,if any, can use their own accounts. To open an account press the Control Panel then User Account then create your own account. In that case you should use what is called the Classic Logon Prompt ( find under logon options) in order to type a user name & password. In that case no file or programe downloaded & used by you would be accessible to other users, except those which are necessary to operate the machine. This applies to Window XP as far as I know.

Normally, when I download a file that I wouldn't want anyone to see, I would put it in an obscure place. Try going to My Computer > C:/Drive> Windows, then go to a random folder, click on another random folder in that, and hide it there. Remember where you've put it, though.
Alternatively, if you use Windows XP and have a seperate domain, just put it in your documents there.

there are many solutions:
the easiest on, that you can put all what you want to hide in one folder and then you make it HIDDEN, by clicking on it with right click and then go to properties and check check mark on hidden,
and may you can use a program with password.
if you r using widows xp professional , you can convert your FAT system into NTFS and access your PC as administrator, and make new logins for your family, and create a new folder and put all what you wants and remove the permission from any user except you to read this file.

You could download and install WinZip or WinRar. Both are free and they give an option to password protect the contents.
