As a backliden born again cristian I would say yes. As a truck driver I know and can do better at times but at times I make mistakes. As a father I have made many backward steps and as a human with a mind that ascends at times I also descend at times.

It's always possible to take a step back....there are always new things you can learn about something, in my opinion. The mind, heart, and soul always move forward in understanding, but there are plenty of times that we must examine the past to understand it, and for me that is a never-ending process. One of my favorite quotes, ever since I was about ten or eleven(God bless my fifth and sixth grade teacher!) is this:
"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to relive it." - George Santanya
This man has some other great quotes about life as well....

People can take steps back,I am a prime example of that.My knowledge doesn't disappear, but my confidence does, thus it seems like I have gone 2 steps back in my life. The main thing is that you don't let reversal progress prevent you from moving on.Everyone has set backs in life.

Yes, we are always progressing, but not always forward. Our lives cannot be adequately assessed within a one dimensional framework of forward and backward...between point A and point B. We are three dimensional—with ups and downs...and side to sides too! Just like a kite that naturally sways back and forth, yet in spite, soars to awe commanding heights.

No problem on the football reference. Sport has its place.
If there is no "forward progress," my life has been half-wasted, but it is good to step back now and again.
(do we ever really "fully" understand anything?)

According to the Vedic knowledge we can go backwards. We are going up and down from one species of life to another and from the higher heavenly planest, down to hell and back to earth again and again. This is due to the flickering nature of the mind. We have to get out of this illusion of repeated birth, death, old age and disease and raise our consciousness to spiritual reality. the quickest way to come to our constitutional position and return to the Eternal Blissful Spiritual Abode is to chant the Maha Mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from suffering and illusion. go to krishnaculture. for details- read Bhagavad Gita As it is By Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada and come to the purest form of intelligence which is beyond the material mind.
