Poor, but happy....If you're happy, then you can't be that worried about your money...You can't buy happiness.

Being rich or poor is a state of mind. The more aware of one's assets the richer a person is. The less aware of one's assets the poorer the state of mind. For example, a poor man who invents a paper clip out of wire, then can ( or has) become rich, with an internal knowledge of how to market the idea. In that case self-esteem plays into the role of believing in his own sense of being- happiness. To be rich and sad is a state of worry over external factors (like security) that can't address the heart directly. On the other hand, the more aware of happiness we become the greater the chances of experiencing joy -an emanating quality of the soul. To be rich or poor has nothing to do with happiness, but rather knowing the "self". Attaining this higher process is what I want, which answers your question. If it does not answer the question, then sadness will come because more is invested on the external quality of live, then internally - for rich or poor.

Poor and happy, because what good does it do you to have all the riches in the wolrd at the sacrifice of your own happiness? The purpose people want money is to be happy. They strive to become rich, so they can gain happiness, but why be rich if you won't be happy? Somethings can't be bought.

There is no reason why one cannot be BOTH rich AND happy. The main reason many rich people are NOT happy is because they think their wealth REPLACES the other values in life, when, instead, it is supposed to merely SUPPLEMENT and COMPLIMENT them.
They are like the fool at the banquet that throws away the pancakes, just swills down the bottle of syrup and then sits there wondering why his stomach hurts and his appetite isn't satisfied.

Poor, but happy for sure. Riches won't do you any good if you are so miserable that you can even enjoy all that you have.

A happy person is invariably rich...
A rich person is unfortunate to be sad.
If there is no choice, it is better to be poor but happy.
