Depends on what type of truck you have but on Chevy trucks the rear is prone to problems. I have seen the same problem you are having and the solution was a new ring and gear with a new pinion. If the pinion breaks or if pieces break off then the drive shaft will just turn around in circles and the wheels wil not turn. It's slightly difficult to replace and requires air tools. You might want to replace the rear with a used model from salvage.

With the parking brake off.
Jack the trucks rear wheels off the ground.
Pull on the wheels.
If they slide out, you have a broken axle.
If they don't, you have a bad ring or pinion.

Jack the rear end completely off the ground, support the axle with stands, Be extremely careful, use wheel blocks on the front wheels, in front and behind, put vehicle in nuetral, try to free wheel the rear wheels, if they rotate, then its most likely the transmission.

(You mentioned that if you put the truck in gear the driveshaft jerks little.)
If the driveshaft doesn’t turn it means you have trouble with your trany.
Cheers.

U joints??

Hope for that anyway, they are rather inexpensive and most novice backyard mechanics can replace them.
