Doing homework, eh? :-) You can base LAN architecture and selection on many things. A primary decision is topology, which can be bus, ring, star, and also tree or mesh, as well as wireless, or a hybrid of these. Most common nowadays is the star topology for LANs using Ethernet switches. Another criteria is which technology to use (Ethernet versus ATM versus Token ring, etc) but nowadays there's only one choice, Ethernet. Other selection criteria are cost (TCO, total cost of ownership), ease of installation, ease of maintenance and repair, reliability, high availability and fault tolerance options, skill level of technical staff required, etc... Another one might be the throughput of the LAN protocols for example, wired versus wireless, or copper versus fiber, etc.
