It appears that you have already received several correct answers. The pipe that is shaped like a "U" can be removed easily. The earring should be in the base of the pipe.
However if you ran the water AFTER the earring was dropped, the water pressure could have forced the object farther down hte drain and it's history.

in case you seem decrease than the sink, you will see the place the pipe bends on the backside. in many situations in case you drop something down the sink, you will locate it in that bend. place a great bowl or pot decrease than the bend and unscrew the threads on each and each end of the bend (you will in all probability desire a pipe wrench). permit the water drain into the bowl, unload the contents of the bent pipe into the bowl, then experience around on your earring interior the water.

Everyone is correct about the P-trap. Except you dont have to turn off the water-- the P-trap is only a DRAIN, not a supply, and you dont ever glue a P-trap- It has two nuts, one on each side, that you looosen and it slides off.
It takes 20 seconds to remove it and about the same to put it back on. Dont worry about "screwing it up", You're not cutting or damaging anything.

Yes, best way to get it out is to run hot water fast and hard. It'll clear the diamond out of the trap and you won't be bothered with clogged pipes. You may not have to spend money on a plunger after all.

Take the pipe apart at the bend, if you haven't run a lot of water down the drain you just might get lucky and find it.

Call a plumber! He (or she) can disconnect the trap. My husband has rescued stuff for me that had gone down the drain. I wouldn't run water down it until you can recover your earring.

MY HUSBAND HAS TO THIS FOR ME ALL THER TIME, I CAN OD IT MYSELF NOW. sHUT OFF THE WATER UNDER YOUR SINK, GET A PAIR OF CHANNEL LOCKS AND REMOVE THE PEA TRAP WHICH IS THE "U" SHAPED PIECE UNDER THERE CONNECTED TO THE PIPES. DO IT CAREFULLY, AND YOUR EARING SHOULD BE IN THE PEA TRAP. REMOVE IT AND THE SIMPLY PUT PIPE DOPE, ( A TYPE OF GLUE FOR PIPES) AROUND THE PEA TRAP, AND RE INSTALL IT. aLLOW TO DRY FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES OR SO THEN TURN WATER BACK ON. VWALLA! YOU DID IT YOURSELF.

If you have not flushed it through the trap by running water, it could still be in the trap. That is fairly simple to remove and check.
