I was wondering if the collection of used stamps given to me by my grandmother would have any real value if I were to sell them. I have quite a few that I believe to be valuable. (For example: Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson first State issued stamps, forgien stamps and so forth)
I've seen books with estimated prices in them but this is for unused stamps. How would I go about determining a selling price or would they be of any value at all since they have been used?

There is some very good advice at http://www.virtualstampclub.com/inherit for exactly your stuation. This is a site maintained by stamp collectors, not anyone wanting to buy or sell stamps at a profit. Please take a look.

Leave any stamps that are on envelopes on the envelopes. Most modern (after about 1940) stamps are not worth a lot and some that are 100+ years old are not worth much - it all depends on how many were issued and how many people want them. Some stamps are actually more valuable used than unused, especially if they are on the original envelopes.

Usually the best thing to do is to keep a collection intact for your own enjoyment or that of another family member. Your future grandchild might love someday to have a collection that went back to his/her great great grandmother!

Cancelled stamps (postmarked) generally lose their collectible value once they're cancelled, but some have retained value regardless of the postal ink on them.

I would recommend using Yahoo Yellow Pages (cheap plug for the host service LOL) to locate a nearby stamp collector and have them assess the value of your stamps in person.

Unless there is somethimng really rare, don't expect much. Also they are used. Mint, never hinged stamps bring the best price. Take the whole thing to a stamp dealer and he will make you an offer. Good luck.

Inherited collections are the number 1 thing collectors and dealers go after. You may have a gold mine in there!

Try bringing it to the closest dealer in your area, and get it appraised, each and every single stamp.

Then, you can sell them to collectors or dealers, or wait a few more years and selll them for higher value.

The value would be greatly reduced for used stamps. You are better off keeping them and remembering your grandmother.

I think the best thing for you to do is to get those stamps properly evaluated by a professional. There are stamp collecting clubs all about.

Yes they would be valuable, depending on how old they are,and if they have postmarks on them.take them to a post office or a local trade center and someone should know how much their worth.
