First it was the original "Lean on me" movie with Morgan Freeman (excellent movie) then it went down the toilet w/ "Dangerous Minds" with Michelle Phifer
Then there was "The Substitute "1,2,3,..... where the teacher was kicking their tails. "Sister Act". I liked "High Schoo High" though because it made fun of the genre. Now there's "Freedom Writers" with Hilary Swank. Did I leave any other movies out? Anyway I'm so done with these type of movies. Here's how they always go (they're so predictable):
1.Teacher arrives at Ghetto High
2.Students immediately dislike the new teacher (they dont listen, throw garbage etc.)
3. Teacher finds a way to warm up to students
4. Slowly but surely the students start to accept the teacher.(crack jokes, dance with her, start to build personal relationships.)
5. One of the students has a personal problem at home that the teacher gets involved in and helps solve.
6. The students graduate Ghetto High and are off to college.

Oh yeah, Only the Strong was pretty dope. They should make more movies with Capoeira Martil Arts in it.

Actually at first I thought it would be very similar to Dangerous Minds, but I went to a free screening of it before it came out to the public and it is very moving. I think it has more to it then just another copycat, it comes from real people. In the movie, a few of the excerpts from the students' journals are narrated. It made me want to go and get the book to read what those kids had written that was left out of the movie. If you haven't seen it yet, I wouldn't turn my back on it just yet just because it looks like the others. There is a lot of different elements to this movie...drama and even a little comedy

Don't forget The Principal. James Belusci I think.
What's the one with the Caluculus teacher and the dislexic student?
How about Summer School? Does that count? It follows your recipe.
BTW, Dangerous Minds was extremely offensive to me. Remember the story goes that Michelle Phiffer was a Marine. Well the movie came out while I was serving in the Marine Corps. Let me tell you, I know alot of female Marines and NONE of them are as soft and cowardly as the character played by Michelle. She did an aweful job, and so did the writers and directors. The movie would have been a little less offensive if they just left out the part that she was a Marine.

I'm glad i'm not the only one who see this. Here's another one:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ron_Clark_Story
The Ron Clark Story with that guy from Friends. It was made for TV.
I even think Finding Forrester with Sean Connery was more of the same.
The Substitute movies were absolutely horrible. I made the mistake of watching the first one and couldn't believe that they were getting away with such garbage.
Hollywood is garbage.

Yeah, these movies are cliche, and are always targeting "at-risk" kids as the worst pupils. I've taught rich kids and they are ten times worse. Hollywood makes the teaching field look so easy: just crack some jokes, dance like a clown, give Johnny an "A" and talk about his personal problems and you'll be Teacher of the Year!
Doesn't work like that.

What about the sports team cliche movie. Take out teacher and put in coach. "Remember the Titans" was the best of those.

Good question! I agree with you. It's Hollywood's and/or the teacher's union's way of making teachers out to be heroes and saviors. Yes, there are great teachers out there, but if all teachers were great and if the great teachers could make that big of an impact on our society/children, then there wouldn't be any more at-risk youth. But, hey, then there wouldn't be any more movies like this either, so.... hmmmm.... :)

Most predictable genre is by far romantic (so boring). Most predictable movie would have to be The Wedding Planner

Maybe it is because the only accepted role models in the community are either Al Sharpton types, who say there is nothing people of color can do to better themselves without becoming "Uncle Tom" , or Rappers and Athletes.

I know what you mean...but we watch them anyway...I love "Only the Strong," It has the martial arts twist and the bad acting and 80s-early90s fashion flare to keep you interested in a not so serious way...I am not ashamed...I own the video, and watch it!
