and I got my first pay and went to the bank and deposited it, now there is a hold on it for at least 7 business days... can they do that? why?
it was a business check from a workplace

Never heard of a 7 day hold on a payroll check. Talk to someone at the bank, maybe the company has credit problems or the teller did not realize that it was a payroll check.

Find out and if you don't like the reason, switch banks.
