It depends on where yu are. We have a service near us called Cricket which has unlimited talk time and free long distance for about $40 a month, after you buy a phone rangiing between $75-$200. That would be good for your teen, as I've found they tend to go way over their minutes, which can rack up a huge bill. Text messaging is also very popular these days, so it's best to pay the extra $ for a monthly text plan, or you end up paying 10cents to 35cents per text. Many cell phone plans offer a free phone or majorly discounted phone if you sign up for a two year contract. There are so many different carriers, you will have to research the ones available where you are to find one that is perfect for you. Family plans are nice, too, because then you can talk to anyone on the plan for free mobile to mobile minutes, so when you call t say "Where the heck are you and why aren't you home" you don't have to worry about talk time.

As far as specific phones, I've been really happy with Nokia for their durability and ease of use. I currently have Nokia 6102i,

which is fairly priced and has a pretty good camera (another big bonus for your teen). I've dropped it in a few puddles and even the faceplate (not the one that camewith it, I bought a cute one at the mall) is wearing out but the phone is doing well. My husband has the same phone and even he likes it and he is way picky. My mom always swears by Motorola, and has had pretty good luck with those as well. The only other brand I tried was LG, and it was horrible and didn't pick up signal very well, I had to go outside to talk on it, which is a real pain if you are in a mall or something.

Other options to discuss with your offspring:
music/mp3s
texting/sending photos
customizable faceplate
usage area (you don't want to pay roaming if he/she makes frequent beach trips)
Coolness factor (big and clunky is so out)

Talk to your teen about what is right for you both. Discuss who will be paying the bill, and who will be paying any extra usage fees. You will be much smarter to research this fully before getting locked into a plan that wipes out your pocketbook and your kid hates.

One more idea is a pay as you go plan. You buy the phone, then buy calling cards for it. Very popular for kids and teens, because they are not able to go over their minutes and teaches them to save them for when necessary. On the other hand, you pay much more per minute. This might be an idea to at least start out.

For a teenager? The cheapest Nokia you can find. Nokia's are very durable and can stand up to a lot of battering around. You can buy them on eBay or from the service provider. I got mine for $40 from Cingular, as that's who I get my phone service through.

depending on thje age of the teen, younger teens do well with prepaid phones, and you dont have to worry about them running up a big bill. for older teens they tend to want the better more expensive phones with plans and such. the razor, sliver, blackberry, blackjacks, and slider phones are the craze right now. but they are insanely expensive!
