I have seen clear plastic tubing sliced lengthwise and hot glued into place. The hot glue and tubing will peel off when it is no longer wanted.

Depending upon the quality and value of the chairs, you can buy a spray verathane sealant that will hold up for approx. 6 months.
This product can be painted on also. Don't know how many you need to protect so cost could go up if you are treating 100's.

I have seen a V shaped metal guard installed to block the feet from being able to be rested there. Unattractive.
