A dipstick is the thing you check the oil or transmission fluid with. If your looking at your motor you should see some sort of a handle either up close to the front of the car or back near the fire wall close to the windshield.
Maybe even will have oil or trans printed on top of the handle. When you go to grab it and pull it out you will see this long, thin medal rod to check the fluid. That is called a dipstick.
Gets its name cause when you need to check fluid levels this stick when put in where it belongs, dips into the fluid at the tip so when pulled out again you can look at the end and check your level.
Most sticks have some form of label check on the tip. Like an oil stick may say on the tip, when you wipe it off, low, add or full. Most vehicles have an oil dipstick, but some vehicles dont have a trans dipstick. Like my car doesnt have a trans. You actually got to set it up on ramps and check it from underneath. Is a pain! but I love my car. Hope this helps.

Hi,
Your answers are pretty much correct.
To use the American - what a dipstick !
Meaning a bit on the dumb side of stuff.
The physical answer is of course the ring-pull jobby under the bonnet, often yellow, which after a wipe, and stuck back in on a level surface, with a cooled down engine, should show whether you need to top the thing up, or leave it alone.
Don't be a complete dipstick.
They serve little purpose.

Now now children don't be cruel.We are here to help and not to mock.Now what i would suggest is,take your motor to your local garage and ask the nice mechanic man where the dipstick is.Once he has recovered and picked himself up off the floor im sure he will show you a dipstick.

The dipstick is what you use to check your oil. If you don't check your oil, you shouldn't have a car, or at least you won't have one for long, because you will ruin your engine if you let it run low on oil. The dipstick is under the hood, and on most newer cars, it will be yellow orange or red so that it will be easy to spot. If you can't find it, take it back to the dealer you bought it from, and ask them to give you the walk through that they should have when you bought the car.

Look in a mirror! Sorry, couldn't resist that. A dipstick is for measuring a liquids level such as the engine oil in your car. It normally is fairly obvious and has a yellow handle. Check your manual.

I also has a video to explain it too.
There are also many other useful articles on car parts and ownership, here is the direct link ;

JR is right. You could also get the manual for the car. They sometimes give a diagram on how to find what under the hood. They aren't in the same place on all cars, but you should know when you see it.

A plymouth argle supporter! You are likely to see them at Home Park, where they are easily distinguishable by their green and white shirts and clubbed feet.
