I know it can be done but would be expensive to do. Are human lives not priceless? Is greed not the biggest factor in this? I mean you have drugs which are illegal to begin with but some where along the line people in our justice system make money off it! The courts, jails and prisons are a great source of income. Plus not to mention the fact that if you are in the justice system it's great to have that legacy so when you retire you can boost about how many people you put away! That's an ego issue though. Back on subject, what I am saying is that the way to stop all this unesessary pain and suffering is to STOP THE SOURCE! But once again there is money to be made! Last part here DO PEOPLE REALLY CARE ABOUT THEIR FELLOW MAN?

The answers are good so far! But once again you say there is a demand well if there was no source then the demand would wane! If I wanted ice cream and there was none availible then I would have to forget about it! As for the prisons and taxes Who do you think gets that money? it sure as hell isn't the prisoners! And I am sorry but it doesn't cost anything to but a guy in a room and feed him! Maybe cost per day is around $5 per inmate per day but the prisons and jails recieve roughly $150 per inmate so where does that other $145 go? Makes me laugh that you think that the are money pits! They are a fast growing revenue source for the people involved! Back to the top! Don't even tell me we don't have the technology to find where drugs are grown in central america! Find them and wipe them out simple! Pretty soon you the supplies will dwindle and the prices will skyrocket and you will have priced out people and it will continue till it isn't a profitable business! I don't have room 4 more

No.

Unfortunately in some circumstances, you're not going to stop people from doing what they want to do, regardless of the ramifications to themselves or others.

This is one of the acceptable prices to be paid in having a free society. Would you rather be free or have your every action, movement and decision controlled?

The war on drugs is a failure and it will always be a failure the way it is fought now.

As long as people want drugs there will be a market. As long as drugs are illegal, it will be a black market, which makes it extremely profitable.

As long as there is a lot of money to be made, people will find a way to make it.

The way to stop or drastically reduce the drug problem is to stop or drastically reduce DEMAND. The demand generates the supply, not the other way around.

Education. Behavior modification. Religion. Spirituality and 12 step programs. These are the only tools we have right now, but they do work. More of them would do more good.

I suspect in the future as more research is done, we will understand a lot more about how addiction works in the brain and we will be able to treat the problems with counteractive medications and even gene therapy. Once we are able to do that, i think the drug problem will begin to reverse it's trend of moving into the middle and upper classes and eventually the poor will be able to get this type of help as well. Thats where the hope is. Treatment, not dropping tactical nukes all over Columbia and doubling the size of the Coast Guard.

How would you go about "Stopping the Source"? And prisons are not revenue centers, they are cost sinks. They cost tax payers millions of dollars per year.

There is this pesky thing called national sovereignty. We are not imbued with the limitless power to enter other countries and do as we please.

Besides, if your original premise is true and that there are money grubbing politicians profiting off of the drug trade (certainly it does make great political capital), then how do you we propose go about getting them to change their official stances?

Drugs are bad, yes. And in an ideal world, waving a magic wand and making the drugs go away would be lovely, but I don't think anyone has found the wand yet.

Legalization (which has its own problems) would seem a more plausible way to achieve your goals of emptying out the prisons. People are destroying their lives with cigarettes and alcohol already, but I don't think they should be banned.

If I want a beer, I want a beer, I don't have to be an alcoholic to like alcohol.

"intents and purposes" not "intensive."

Human lives are priceless, but everything else has a price. There is a cost to stopping the source as you say. That cost may include money for police, border protection, surveillance, court hearings, etc., as well as possibly infringements on liberty. In the meantime, there are competing prioirities. Why this problem and not food, or housing?

Our drug problem could certainly be reduced greatly if the border was closed! Drugs are Mexico's #1 source of income with money wired from the USA #2.... I also believe the "money issue" is the reason our government still lets drugs come into our country!

There will always be a source if there's a demand. If you want to work on the demand, that's commendable. That's the only way to stop the problems.

Otherwise, you're suggesting a loss of freedom and rights for a false sense of security.

Thanks, but no thanks. I'll take my chances with the animating contest of freedom and liberty.

"money makes the world go 'round" yeah right...the companies and government are making so much money off of these that they don't want to shut them down. Even if they are hurting people. In a perfect world...this wouldn't happen, but sorry, this a'int quite what I'd call a perfect world. =/

Maybe you should add sex and eating to that list. There is no way for the government to get rid of all the drugs and alcohol. Maybe you dont watch tv much. Most of these drugs are homemade. Think about how much we spend on combating drugs already. I totally agree that drugs and alcohol are horrible, but there is no way to rid our society of them. Sorry.

In a perfect world that would be possible. But if there wasn't a market for such things there wouldn't be suppliers for them. Therefore in order to stop the source you would have to eliminate the need or the people who need...
