Do you still keep in touch with friends from college/HS/childhood?

I find that I have a really hard time preventing friendships from just drifting apart once I graduated, moved, etc.

It's not that I don't have the time to phone or write e-mails or whatever. It's that we end up not having anything to talk about any more.

That makes me wonder whether most of my friendships were really shallow (based on just being in the same place, hanging out).

This ia very typical of relationships. When people move apart, different life experiences cause people to have less and less in common.

Friends I had in high school and friends I had on the East Coast and I have drifted apart. We rarely talk, rarely send Xmas cards, etc.

It's not that the relationsip was shallow, it's that you've grown apart over the years. Make new friends where you are, and make them quality friendships.

Your friendships aren't necessarily shallow. It's just part of growing up. People drift apart. If you can just have one or two people who you can keep close the rest of your life, you're doing way better than most.

Keep them on your holiday email list if it means that much to you. Lead by example; maybe they're not as mature as you are.

True friendship is something that is precious and rare. It is common for people to call any mere acquaintance a friend when in fact, nothing more exists than just hanging out of convenience. The bond of friendship is priceless and I would have to say that the people you have encountered were just people passing through your life and that does not make it bad thing. While these people were in your life they meant something to you. Cherish that and do not judge it for what it is nor for what it isn't.

I agree with u, it happens to me, all the time, I think we get tired of going out and making the effort, once u know someone friendship turns a little difficult, you find out things about the other person than u don't completelly like, I wish it didn't
