Maybe he he's downtrodden.
Oh that was awful.
Perhaps he's sleeping and the horse had a tummy ache? No. Maybe the horse had just died and he had to walk the rest of the way and the ground was dirty. People were legally required to sit on their horses once they died back then. They had weird senses of humor.

It wasn't dead when he started out, but then he came to a Seattle traffic light and has been stuck there ever since.
