I know that the law firm Tom Cruise was working in was a shady organization that dealt with the Mafia and they were overcharging the clients, but why did his wife agree to spend the night with Gene Hackman? Is it because she wanted to photocopy some papers in his storeroom, and if so, how did Holly Hunter get the papers from her so fast? I thought the photocopy machine was in the law firm building a floor below, and not in Gene Hackman's house? I'm giving up on John Grisham cos I don't understand a lot of his work.

Thanks JCNUK... I'm a real dodo when it comes to John Grisham's work. I mean, I love the overall storyline, but I can't stand not understanding parts of it. I'm going to read one more John Grisham novel, and if I find difficulty understanding parts of it like I did with the previous ones I read/watched, I'm going to give up on him.

Tom's original plan was to take the files while Gene was scuba diving, which he did not do because he didn't have the time. His wife found out and she went for two reasons. One to help her husband get the files to Holly (Tom was unaware she was in the Cayman) Two.... payback. Tom slept with the girl on the beach and this was her way of getting back at him. Tom's wife slipped Gene a mickey and he passed out. She was then able to get the keys to open the door with files. She then passed the files to Holly. The scene was only around 30 seconds long but it was made to seem that it was happening throughout the night. Which would've gave them enough time to make the copies.

First of all mate, stop being so dramatic, for two reasons John Grisham did not direct the movie and directors cannot go "by the book" in every instance whereas Grisham can. Second, that is one of Grisham's first books and one of his best. I wouldn't give up on him, he is one of the most straightforward writers, yet you never know what is coming.

His wife agreed to spend the night with Gene Hackman so Holly Hunter's Character would have time to copy the files. This whole scene I think had to be simplified on screen for the sake of time and to deliver the point to the audience that that Laqfirm was screwed.

Yes, it is because she wanted to help her husband. With the help of the boat rental guy, Holly Hunter faxed the copies to Tom Cruise. I have never read any of John Grisham's books, but I have seen The Firm several times. It is one of the best thrillers that I've ever seen. As with most movies, you may need to watch it again to fully understand everything.
