I can only afford about half.
It was due on the first, I have to call my landlady and tell her. What should I say?
Next month is my last month, my "free" month and then I'm out of here.

What should I do???

I assume you've already given notice, correct?

Call her immediately and tell her you can only pay half. Then tell her exactly when you can pay the other half. Either in two weeks, on your next payday, or maybe even on the first of NEXT month, in place of your totally free month.

Either that, or find out if you can move out halfway thru next month, and so you're only PRO-RATING this month for half, and then the final month starts ticking halfway through.

Can you get a loan from a good friend or family member? If not, do you think you will have the other half of the rent later in the month? If you have always been good about paying your rent on time, then if your landlady is a reasonable person she should (I hope) understand, especially since you are leaving. If there's no way you can come up with the money at all, perhaps you should ask if she keep that portion of your security deposit in lieu of payment. Sure, you won't get all your deposit back, but you won't have to scrounge for money either, and your landlady should be appreciative of you for being honest.

Good luck! :)

You should call her as soon as you can. as a landlady, Im sure she is waiting for her money. She doesnt want to bug.. or at least I dont assume so. If you know her well, like if she has been nice to you in the past, then just sit down with her and tell her you have had some difficulties this month and you were thinking of coming of up with the money but it just didnt work out, this way she will know that you didnt wait until the last minute. Let her know you did wrong, then she will ask you, when will you have the money? of course she is going to ask you this, so be honest thats the least you can do, im sure she will say ok, unless you have already had difficulties in the past.
best of luck

Call her and handle your problems.

When you say "free" month, I hope you paid last month in advance and not that you expect them to take it from your deposit. The deposit is meant for damages after you move out, not as last month's rent.

Call your landlord and explain to her that you can only pay half this month and that you will get the rest in ASAP. About two or three weeks. Honesty is the best thing to do.

call and tell her and be honest the worst she can say is no and if you are moving out of their anyway next month it would take her longer than that to have you kicked out. and your last month is free only if you paid for first and last when you moved in

Next month isn't "free". In fact, I'll bet your lease specifically says you can't use your security deposit in lieu of last months rent.

Find a way to pay all your rent this month and expect to pay all of next month's on the first.

If not, you'll get sued and the cost will be huge.
