Email me off list if you want to take it further but here is a short answer...

You can register a domain with a domain registrar..
(There are many registrars who handle control of .com where .com is a called a tld. Usually .US would be handled by a US based registrar, .co.uk would be handled by a UK based registrar.).
Domains can be sold by 3rd parties who have agreements with domain registrars.
You should never pay more than $2 for a domain of certain types (such as .com, .net, .org). Some domain names such as .eu have a premium, but most of the regular domains are cheap.
A reseller gets a massive discount based on the number of domains they sell. Shop around for the best price.

A lot of webhosting companies give free domain registration when you purchase a web server account.
You can host your own web server on your home network, but that has a list of complications.
Again, web hosting is cheap and never pay anything more than $20 a month. You can get cheap and 99.99% reliable web hosting for less than $3-4 a month, it all depends on what you want out of it.

Take google adsense... simply by owning a website and placing google adverts on your site you can earn revenue.
But that depends on your site and the number of visitors it attracts. There are people who have been earning hundreds of thousands of dollars per MONTH just from google adsense.
(But, there are millions of people using google adsense who are making $1 a month... Google adsense are the winners in both cases).

It all depends on what you intend to do with your website, so you should make sure that any future web host looks at your requirements and understands them.
If they don't appear to understand them, find someone else.
If you are going to need support, then verify that they have good support.

Remember, Google is your friend.. Google for any info on a future webhost, you will always find +ves and -ves

well first you need to get a domain which is what your website address will be. if you go the free route, it will be something like "mywebsite.angelfire.com" you have to pay to have a website address like "mywebsite.com" you can get on angelfire.com and get a domain for cheap or even yahoo sells them as well. after you get a domain, then you can design your website. i know that angelfire has tools to help you so that if you don't know html or any type of webdesign code, then you can just use their tools to pick what you want. if you want to sell stuff on your website, you need to do some extra steps. one thing is that you need a shopping cart of some sort incoroporated into your code. you can usually buy shopping cart software and just copy and paste it where appropriate. second, you need an account for your business. your business has to be registered - which i am not sure how to do. there are books that would help you like ebusiness for dummies or something. there is a lot of steps to it and you want to make sure you do it right or you wont make any money or be doing something illegal. good luck!

You have to get a domain name (eg. domainname.com)
and a hosting account from yahoo or godaddy.

Then build your site and upload it to your hosting acc.
