I define luck as the tipping point when all relevant factors/events converge to create a beneficial opportunity....it's the idea of the right moment, occuring at the right time in the right way........of course, these factors/events must be in existence which means that hard work, diligence, been steadfast, all have to dow ith why & how people succeed.....

There certainly is, although the correct term might be "chance" or "probability."
What does being competitive have to do with it?
I can be both competitive and extremely non-competative totally depending upon the issue/topic.
I have always been the "captain of my life's ship;" the "director of my own play." If I don't like the way things are going, I don't sit and cry in my beer; I take positive, specific steps to effect some change. And yet, I do not have control over every aspect of my life, so, there is such a thing as "luck" (or as I said "chance").
The woman that I met, to whom I have been married for over 36 years ~ that was totally a stroke of "luck" when we met.
BUT
From that moment forward, we took our lives in the direction that we wanted, never looked back and never regretted a minute of it.
Yes, there is "luck." Both good and bad. Some people seem to experience more of one or the other, but you know what that is?
Chance.

Hey vishnugop...,
Well, if there is a 20 dollar bill on the ground and it goes in my wallet, no one to claim it, that makes me lucky to have found it. I did not compete for that money. There are circumstances that are just plain lucky. If you use the lottery as an example of luck, by participating with one ticket, you just put yourself into the position of being able to have luck. If you buy 10 million tickets, you might not get it back, but you might win 100 million dollars, you have increase your odds of being luck at the risk of failing miserably.
Is it lucky that a person gets a high paying job over another? Yes, but only partly. The person had to meet the qualifications, worked hard to get the education and experience and wrote a slightly better cover letter. His interview whent a little better too, so he got the job. He made his own luck and that is where your statement makes sense.
from Wikipedia, there is more discussion there also:
Luck can be defined as that which happens beyond a person's control, or as preparation and opportunity coming together . Luck is often regarded as a superstition, or as a chance happening of fortune, but it can be interpreted in many ways.

Once there was a farmer who had 1 horse. And one day the horse ran away. All of his neighbors said to him, 'Such bad luck for you'.
The farmer said, 'Is this bad luck?'
Then a few weeks later the horse came back with a bunch of other horses that walked right onto the farm. His neighbors now said, 'Such good luck you have!'
The farmer said, 'Is this good luck?'
The man's son decided to learn to ride some of the horses, but one day fell off the horse and broke his arm. His neighbors said, 'Such a shame, more bad luck'.
The farmer said, 'Is this bad luck?'
Then a while war broke out but his son could not go off to fight because his arm was broken. His neighbors again said, 'You have good luck again.'
The farmer asked, 'Is this good luck?'

I wouldn't call it an excuse, even in competition, some things are outside of our control like which way a loose football bounces...some times we get "lucky" when it bounces to us and we are unlucky when it bounces away...I think it is our perception of the randomness in nature....we just call it luck.

some times people who ARE competitive say they are lucky, but they're just being modest, and luck is part of a lot of things, but you have to have luck and another skill too, persay musical chairs.. if your fast, its not always luck. but playing war (the card game) is luck.
