The Mayan Calender was created by the Mayan indians to give them the dates for growing their crops. It all had to do with crops because without them they would starve. The calendar was set up according to the sun and told them when to plant and when to harvest. There are many times through out their calendar year (and the calendar did not reflect days months or years) when they could grow and harvest.
The calender runs in a circle just like years revolved (in orther words January is back again on our calenders) their seasons revolve.
This is an ancient science and it served the Mayans well.

I just got back from a cruise to Mexico and was imersed in Mayan culture. We saw the ruins at Chitzen Itza near Progresso Mexico and the ruins out of Belize. Both were manificent and you really wonder how these indians built them. They were built for worship of the sun and moon and a temple for them. And yes, I stood on the stairs where the Mayans rolled the heads of indians as sacrifices to the Gods so that they would get rain and good crops. I was there and it was great. Just went the middle of December.
Remember, Mexicans are a mix of Mayan (or Inca or Aztec or a combo) Indians and Spanish. A remarkable people.

Make sure you see Mel Gibsons new movie "Acopolipto" out in theatres now. It was wonderful and seemed real, the sacrifices are very graphic though and not meant for the young.
