I am a very big fan of VW. They have really turned the quality around since any 03 models. Anything prior to that is a little iffy.
I have had a 03 Gti since I brought it brand new at the end of 02 and it is great zero problems. My wife has a 06 beetle that has had zero problems as well.
my sister has a 04 ford focus. I don't even have the time or space on this to list all the problems.
Every car manufacturer has a few lemons in their line up or even a few bugs in every model. Some people have tons of problems, where other people with the same cars have no problems.
also, Toyotas are crap.

in my 30 years of buying cars, I found that GM makes the best and the most inexpensive to repair with thier counterparts all the rest seem to be more expensive in the parts and the location of the ones that seem to die first. I presently have a 1992 buick century custom with 239,000 miles. It has been the best investment i have made, even throught the other cars that i purchased throughout the years. the perticular engin that is in this car is a 3.3 liter engine. Some people would disagree on the car but the day it was driven off the showroom floor, its had 2 miles on it. So far to date, only 3 parts have been replaced.
Purrs like a kitten. So if you want to by a car.. go with GM. Best thing to do is find out what the most expensive thing on the car you might have to replace and go from there. Dont let price be your convincer. Do your homework. IT will save you in the long run

From a practical point of view, there is really no way of telling who makes the best cars as far as your question is phrased. Vehicles manufactured by the companies you mentioned have a multitude of variances. Therefore there is a lack of criteria as far comparisons are concerned. On the other hand, if all these manufacturers set off and built a vehicle bearing the same design and components, then you will have a basis for comparisons. But for me, the best car nowadays, affordable price (for the common working people), and durability. I'd go with a toyota. cheers :)

The best-made from all those manufacturers are probably those built by Ford at their Saarlouis plant in Germany (Euro-market Focus and C-Max), although Suzuki's build quality is good too.
VW's quality is not as good as its reputation suggests, and its build processes are less efficient than many other manufacturers (particularly Toyota).
