It depends which province. The GST (General Sales Tax) across Canada is 6%. There is another tax which is known as PST (Provincial Sales Tax) but the amount varies from province to province: Ontario is 8%, BC is 7%, Manitoba is 7%, Quebec is 7.5%, Saskatchewan is 5%, PEI is 10%. Don't forget that both these amounts are added for the total tax.

Janzies forgot to mention that in PE and QC the provincial tax is calculated on the subtotal that includes the Federal GST. So if you buy something for $1, there's 6 cents GST and then you must calculate the PE tax (10%) or QC tax (7.5%) on $1.06, not $1.

It depends on what you buy. There are so me deductions for non residents, thier may be tariffs if you are not in canada, that is high, let me see, if you are in ontario and getting fast food that is 21 percent tax just for non food in ontario that would 14 percent.
if you do not live in canada you can get a tax refund.
http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tax/business/topics/gst/menu-e.html this is the canadian tax agecny with calc and info for non residents.

It depends on what you buy and where you buy it.
Sales tax laws vary by province and item, for example, the GST is not added on grocery items, and in Saskatchewan, the PST is not added on restaurant meals and children's clothing
