My 61-year old female co-worker told me at age 43, it is too late in my life to make a career change and not follow my dreams to be a filmmaker, that I should just stay at the job I'm not happy in because at least, it's paying my bills. Is she right? She tells me my dreams will never get anywhere that I'm living in a fantasy world. I hear plenty of people's dreams that have come true because they went after it.

Have a game plan to follow. Have you been in film school or are you 'just thinking about it'. My son wanted to be a rock star (still does at 25). I told him to go for it but have Plan B. He went to college and graduated with a business degree and is now working on his 2nd degree to be a teacher. Still plays in several bands and now teaches guitar. Is he a rock star? No. but he's still doing something he loves. Blending best of both worlds. Can you do this with filmmaking? Absolutely!!!!

The Idealistic answer is: It's never too late.

The realistic answer is:
It depends on your goals and circumstances.

I am a pretty well paid, 43 yr old computer professional. I have a dream to be a professional pilot.

I got my Private Pilot's License about 6 years ago. Fantasy part complete! To go for a career, I need about 2 years of training, okay, that makes me 45.

Will an airline hire a new 45 year old pilot NOT! Could I get a job flying corporate jets? NOT!

Could I be a flight instructor at the local airport? YES Will it pay anywhere near what I make? NOT Will it ever? NOT Could I be a Charter Pilot Yes! What does that pay? Start at less than 1/2 what I make.

Could i chase my dream at 43 and be a professional pilot? YES But can I still pay the mortgage? Can I put my kids through school? Can I live in my current house? Can my wife cover the living expenses?

It all depends on what you want, what you expect and what your circumstances are.

It all depends on what you are after in life. If film making is your ultimate dream and you can't imagine life without pursuing it, even if you do fail, than do it! What have you got to lose. If, you decide it isn't for you, you can find a new full time job somewhere else, with the attitude that you went after your dream! Besides, people forget that there is plenty of film making that isn't Hollywood film making. Training vids, documentaries, commercials, there is a whole lot of possibility out there!

If the fear of being caught in that job forever outweighs the fear of "paying the bills" go get it girl!

Sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my first cat to this 15 years ago. Today that's all I have... rescue groups often have problems finding homes for positive cats, so many have to be killed. Feline leukemia is a blond borne pathogen, so some basic cleaning will need to be done. Including trashing the litter box. However when the time come to adopt a new family member... how about adopting a pos kitty. I keep my 3 100% indoors and when I need to kennel them, they stay with our vet. Other than that you there isn't any difference. FF my oldest right now is 10 and doing fine.

It is never too late . I made a career change at age 43 yrs, I went to college, got my nursing career. I retired from being a nurse in 2002. It was a very rewarding experience for me. I learned allot along the way. I now do volunteer work, which I also enjoy.Follow your dream, you will be glad you did, I know I made the right choice. It is never too late to try something different. Good Luck.

Heck no, there are people older than your co-worker going back to college and starting new businesses and careers. Think of it this way, would you rather stay financially safe and unhappy, or take a risk and fulfill your dreams? Besides, when you prove her wrong you can rub her nose in it.

If you have talent as a film maker then start by making shorts and do what you can to transition yourself into your new field.
Your co-worker has a point as far as remaining secure and safe with income and a means to care for yourself. I believe if you want to become a film maker , then do it! It is never too late!
Good Luck! You CAN do it!

No way! You still have about twenty years give or take until you retire and have fun. Do what your heart tells you to. Read Rita Golden Gelman's 'Tales of a Female Nomad' for inspiration. It will change your life.

While your co-worker is wrong in this, please don't confuse "following your dreams" with "financial solvency." If you decide to make a mid-life change of career, you may want to do it in steps, just to make sure you don't leave yourself and your family hungry.

Never let go of one branch until you have a grip on another one.

Good luck!

it sounds like your going though the midlife thing. i would say stick with what your doing and in your spare time try to do what you really want to do. take some classes at a college near you in filmmaking if you haven't already. you might find that it is not really for you or that it is even better for you than you though.it's not to late for your to do what ever you want to do.
