MOSS STITCH (M.St.)

This is a pattern created by alternately working one knit stitch and one purl stitch on every row. The Purl stitch is worked over the Knitted stitch on the subsequent row.

As the others have said, but also try a DOUBLE moss-st. which gives an interesting effect - K.2, P.2 for 2 rows as if doing rib, then alternate - P.2, K.2 for 2 rows so that stitches are staggered over each other.
