This question is not as cut and dried as it seems, since both provide essential dietary nutrients.

Tomatoes are rich in vitamin C, and tons of 'enes, such as lycopene, phytoene, neurosporene, and carotenes, as well as provitamin A.

Potatoes provide essential carbohydrates, is an excellent source of essential amino acids, like lysine, phytochemicals, potassium, and even provides a small amount of very high quality protein.

I wouldn't want to live on either of them, exclusively, but you would probably get farther with potatoes than tomatoes, though I personally prefer tomatoes.

Generally speaking, yes. Tomato is rich in folic acid. It is good antioxidant. Potato is starch only, no vitamin or mineral.
However, there are certain conditions, like thyroid problems, when tomato should be avoided.

I do believe that they may have the same value. Cooked tomatoes are more nutrious than uncooked. Mashed potatoes are extremely good for your health and taken before bed, can be most soothing if you cannot sleep. I don't know why, but it really works.

Depends on what you're wanting to get out of them. If you want lycopene, vitamin C, vitamin A, and very few calories, go with a tomato.
If you want energy (carbohydrates) and potassium, go with a potato.
