We all want to do things that are fun and take us to new and exciting places. Start with what she's into. Magazines with pictures are great. Take her to the library or bring in truck loads of library books you've borrowed for her. Labels on things can be a fun activity to do together, so she recognises word shapes, and has things around her labelled. Maybe write a story of her life or write an imaginative story together, where she tells you what to write and you type or write it for her. She' ll end up with a folder or little books which she can "read" even when you're not there. Use technology - computers are great and libraries and friends will have games which involve reading. CD ROMs like Grandma and Me are fun, and she can read along and make things happen. Give her a smorgasbord of choices and see which ones she goes for. Reading is empowering and she should feel empowered learning to read too. Maybe read her a great book (offer choices) a few pages each visit, with her looking on at the text. Get her to read every time the words "the" or "and" come along. Then expand it. Most of all have a great time. And let her attempt words, before rescuing her. Have fun, what a wonderful opportunity.

I'm an Education Major in college and from what I know right now, the best thing to do is to teach her Phonics. This will allow her to sound out words. It might be difficult but keep encouraging her and practicing and she will get it. Some good sites that I've found are:
http://www.genkienglish.net/phonics.htm
http://www.starfall.com/

Both of those sites are interactive and will help her with the Phonics sounds.

Good Luck!!

You can get learning books, like coloring books at Wal-Mart and start teaching the child phonics. If they learn the phonics first, they can learn to read faster. My 5yr. grandson is reading now in kindergarten because I bought the books and my daughter in law helped him do them.

I am curious to know what your credentials were to be hired for that important role if you don't know what to do?
