Your Ob/GYN doesn't do ultrasounds? I thought they all did them now adays. None the less if your doctor needs to send you somewhere else for diagnostics they will or should give you the forms and referrals you need to either go or make an appt. with whomever they have doing their ultrasounds. So you may not be able to get the ultrasound right away. 18 weeks you can usually tell, though there is still room for a margin of error on the techs part as to what they interpret on the screen. Its a good indicator but not always 100% accurate.

You should be able to determine the sex of the baby, assuming the baby cooperates (doent cross his/her legs, etc.). You will be far enough alogn to find out. To help ensure that the baby will be moving about, try drinking a bit of caffine (coffee, mt dew, pepsi, etc) about an hour or so before you go tot he ultrasound. (**It is reccommended to avoid caffine during pregnancy, however it has been proven that it si safe to consume caffine during pregnancy in MODERATION, meaning do not drink ONLY drinks with caffine in them...limit the amount you drink. My doctor told me this was fine to do).

Your other question...I do not know where you go to get the ultrasound done. I go to a Perinatal Center/OBGYN on a military base at a military hospital, and everythign is done right int eh doctors office, including hte ultrasounds. If you are having to go to a hospital, I am imagining that you will have to go to the radiology department/section to get an ultrasound done. You should be able to call up and put in for an appointment, or your doctor shoudl have scheduled one for you. If you do nto have an appt yet, or do not know what to do, call the docs office and ask what steps you need to take.

Good luck and congrats!

I've never had to go to the hospital to have an ultrasound done excepts when they thought something could be wrong so they sent me to a specialist. Otherwise the first ultrasound was done at the doctors office scheduled for 20 weeks. Your doctor should inform you of this at your next visit. And yes as long as the baby will cor operate they should find out the sex of the baby as long as the baby's legs are spread.

I am 20 weeks pregnant with my second child. I just had an ultrasound done and my doc had it done at the office. Most Ob/Gyn have the ultrasounds done in their office. If they don't have one you will be sent to the hospital to that department. They will give you paperwork if you need to do that. You can't find out the sex unless you have an ultrasound or an amnio done. But you won't have an amnio unless you are considered "at risk". You're pregnancy can be very confusing. Your doc is more than happy to answer questions. That's what they are there for. Believe me any question you may have I am sure they have answered it numerous times. Best of luck and congrats!

My first OB sent me to the hospital for the ultrasound, but I had to call and make the appointment and it took a couple weeks to get in. So, there is a chance it will not happen the same day as your dr. appointment. They will give a prescription to take to your appointment.

My second OB did the ultrasound in the office, so don't be surprised if they do it there. I never realized they could do it there, but in this day of technology, almost anything is possible.

Also, at 18 weeks, as long as the baby is in a good position to be seen, they can tell the sex.

Good luck!

I couldn't tell you about the ultra sound because my obgyn's office was in the hospital, quit convenient really. But as for the telling you the babies sex part. I don't think they can determine that so soon, I think the minimum was 5 months. And even when they do determine the sex, I should warn you, their not always right. So you might want to pick out one of each name just in case.

i thought that my ultrasound was going to be done at the hospital too but someone from the hospital had come to the dr's office and did mine. but if the dr does send you to the hospital for any thing he will give you a pass to give to the nurses. you can call the hospital if you want a 3d or 4d ultrasound but i think that your dr has every thing else under control. i think that you will be able to tell what the sex is because by this time they should be able to tell.

yes you should be able to tell at 18 weeks. Docs usually like to do it at 20 weeks. Your doc will give you orders to get the ultrasound done. You can kinda of think of orders to a hospital as a prescription would be to a pharmacy. Then you schedule at your hospital and they give results and measurements to your doc.

Your doctor will step up an appointment for you to get your ultasound done at the hospital. Also you should be able to tell the sex if the baby wants you know. It all depends on how the baby is laying and if the baby moves and blocks his or her little parts from you is all.

Docs usually give you the sex of the baby around 5-51/2 months along. As for the ultrasound, I had mine at the OB's office, so I think they can be done anywhere, and yes, your OB needs to request it be done.
