We recently bought a house which is over 100 years old, and I'm not an expert in the field but an old tenant told us that the pipes under the house have basically corraded and don't exist anymore. If you stick a pole down the drain in the basement, you get dirt and mud and sometimes unusual objects come up through the drain, for example a diaper has been found and even a t-shirt. My question basically is what are options for fixing such a problem? Thanks!

The whole house needs to be re plumbed. Get recommendations for a plumber through friends or co-workers. I would get at least 3 bids before I settled on one.

I personally would call a plumber to survey the problem. If the pies have cooroded away or even collapsed it will require replacing your sewar leads or taps which requires digging up the yard and/or drive and maybe part of the street (can get expensive). In my area it usually runs about $60 a foot for this type of work (measured from the base of the drain stack to the sewar main in or near the street). It may be a simple matter of cleaning the drains which isn't as expensive but sometimes messy.
Good Luck

You'll need to replace it. If it flooded in your basement, there wouldn't be anywhere for the water to go, so it would destroy everything. Then you'd have mold to worry about...there's just so much wrong with that.

In the future, get a home inspection before you buy a house. This is an expensive problem and probably would have kept you from buying it.

It's simple. You have to pay a plumber to come and put in all new pipes. He may have to finish removing all of the old pipes. It will cost you a lot of money but it will be worth it if the house is otherwise in good condition. If the house is all rotted away too, it seems like you got stuck. I hope you got a good price for your house.
