I guess most people assume you are not a baby factory single handedly trying to repopulate the earth.

Know how that feels. I have had 8 and people have always talked behind my back about it. I have 3 over the age of eight up to 16. and have five under the age of four, i have one set of twins. The youngest member of the family is just 1, if you are happy then i wouldn't get to @#$%^^ what people say. I have had responses like that for the last 16 years. and i am planning another two.

Well the shocked part is the fact that you will be returning to work only to be leaving again in 6 months. Though you didn't say why, I'm assuming you are returning to work from maternity leave? or is it from the holidays? None the less, sounds like you've taken alot of time off recently there fore seems like there is no need to be going back to work just to be taking off again very soon. You obviously don't live in a "right to work" state, because once you've returned they can let you go for any reason, but they will say that you haven't and will not be able to fulfill your responsibilities for the position you've held. Not to mention in "right to work" states...they don't HAVE to pay you during leave. They only have to allow you to return at the same rate of pay. But they can then fire you for the least little thing.

He was probably relieved that the extra work of finding cover and paying maternity was all over, now he has to do it all over again! I worked for a small company and my boss was devastated when i told her i was preg, she didn't want to find anyone else. Anyway it's just tough, we are protected by law and we can have as many kids as we want!

Congratulations - if you are happy then it's just tough for your boss and he will just have to manage without you when your time comes - he is probably envious that you and your partner are obviously happy and his assumption sound a bit self-righteous - I wonder what his family is like - 2.4 children carefully spaced apart?

Same thing happened to me. I fell pregnant with my second child when my first was just two months old. It was entirely planned - my husband and I wanted our children to be close in age. When I went to see the midwife she said: "Oh, never mind. Accidents happen." The cheek!
