If you are a young single woman, I would recommend the west end as well. You may have to go small or get a room mate to afford a decent place, but that would be the safest area, and the most fun for you with it's convenient location to downtown.

There is decent housing in other parts of the city, but would require more and longer public transit rides. We live in east Vancouver, just a half mile from Burnaby, and have a 950 sq ft basement suite, all utilities included, for $500 ... and it's safe here, we walk at night a lot, but if you were my daughter .. lol ... i would recommend the west end.

I have lived in Vancouver most of my life and let me say, there are VERY FEW cheap places to live in this city.

However, the best advice would be to get your hands on some of the local papers, not the syndicated ones. Vancouver and surrounding areas are renown for there basement suits and small bachelor/one bedrooms which are more reasonable than others. Also, the further away from Vancouver and the older the building, the better the price. Vancouver construction has moved over the years from fewer & larger units (older buildings) to the maximize space and go tall, small units. An example was when I lived in a 2 year old condo, I had 680sqFt. I moved to an older townhouse and jumped to 1290sqFt with only a moderate increase in rent.

Depending on where you will be spending most of your time, don't rule out neighbouring cities:
Vancouver to Burnaby/New Westminster/Coquitlam/Surrey are all connected by light rail rapid transit. Surrey being the farthest away is 45 minutes on the train. I drive daily from New West to Vancouver and it only takes about 20 minutes.

Welcome to our city!

An interesting area to really meet people of all types is around Commercial Drive. If you are looking for short term housing, maybe you would be interested in shared housing (roommates).

For all areas, check out the local listings on Craigslist (link below). Look under Housing. You can browse or post for free. There is a category just for Wanted. You do not have to give out your email, as it anonymizes it.

Be aware of scammers and educate yourself on local regulations (damage deposit, etc). There are some nasty people that prey on foreign students and tourists.

If you are a student, look into doing Homestay with a local family. There are agencies that will assist with that. $600-800 per month.

During the winter, a lot of Bed and Breakfasts may give you an off-season discount.

I see you are Mexican, are you coming for school?

Most of the Language schools are downtown:

I would reccomend you look to rent an apartment in the "West End" - it's a very populated neighbourhood, right downtown, close to all the nightclubs, shops and attractions and transit, plenty of restaurants and late-night businesses, lots of young people and students - its a perfect place for you to "get your bearings", and its one of the safer areas and there are lots of choices for renting (cheap or expensive)

For safety, I would avoid anything around the "Gastown" area, there are a number of student hostels in that area - but it's not so safe for a girl.

I don't know much about Vancouver but I know that the winter is better on the west coast.
And as for miss Athena, Rain is a blessing, would you rather snow and cold freeze your *** off wind? I'd take rain over snow anyday of the week!

Rental in Vancouver is not cheap at all, especially if u want to stay in a best safe places. Downtown close to waterfront and yaletown is ok! But for sure not china town, burnaby. Some part of Surrey is ok!

check craigslist.com. There is a section there where you can check for rentals. You can always check the local papers as well. Sometimes there are homestays available, if you want that.
