Dear, first of all, we have to make a good trouble shooting,
is this problem started with you when you got the laptop or not? as it may be the problem in the hardware, if not, so you can say it will be from the operating system( software), and i want to drag something to your attention as some start up programs use more RAMS while starting,
i think the solution, to be sure from the problem: at first you have to reinstall the windows only without any programs and try the laptop performance, if the problem still exists, so you will discover that the problem from hardware. if not so u can say that it was from the programs or may be you had a virus.

Yes, go to start, run then type in: msconfig.
Then click the startup tab. This will show all the programs that load upon booting up. Unclick the uneeded files, like AIM, Quicktime, Yahoo toolbar ect.
Then, restart and it should boot up much quicker. I'd also run a defrag. To do this, go to start, programs, accessories then sytems tools and click defragmentation. This could take up to 24 hrs, so make sure you won't need the laptop for awhile.
Good luck.

If you are running XP, upgrade your RAM to at least 512MB. 128 is the minimum required, 256 is the minimum recommended, 512 is the recommended according to Microsoft. If you are running resource intensive programs, 1GB would be good, but these programs should only come into play when they are running, not at startup.

Plese click Start>Run>
then type: %temp%
1. You can safely delete all the files there and it should make faster.
2. Start>Run>
Type: msconfig
Disable some known software you installed at start up. It will speed up your PC.
3. Start>Run
Type: recent
Then delete all the files there.
Hope it helps.
Thanks.

get 'hijackthis' program.
never defrag a drive unless there's serious drive issues like bad sectors.
defragging really doesn't speed up the machine.
get avast! also.
after installing 'hijackthis' check out your registry for things that have been embedded by trojans and spyware.

Add more RAM. The 256MB you have is your bottleneck. You should put at least 1GB of RAM in the notebook.
