The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) has gained a lot of attention in recent years with the lawsuits its brought against government entities demanding that religious symbols be removed from public property in order to conform to the concept of "separation of church and state." The vast majority of these suits have been to remove Christian and Jewish symbols. Does anyone know of an instance in which the symbols of other religions have been targeted by the group? In other words, has the ACLU been even-handed in its opposition to religion on public property. Some have said that Christian prayers and symbols are targeted with zeal, but that religious expressions by Muslim, Native American, Wiccan and other religions are ignored, or even encouraged at schools and other public places on the basis of promoting "multi-culturism."

The ACLU is an organization that was founded on the principles of protecting citizens’ constitutional rights. It has in fact done much good in terms of protecting the rights of the average American. During the civil rights movements of the 1960’s the ACLU became a very powerful organization and gained support of the general population in their fight for minorities and the under-privileged. They continued to strengthen during the anti-Vietnam War era of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. These were important issues, but they left the organization with leadership from the extreme left.

The problem began as the civil rights and anti-Vietnam War cases diminished, the ACLU had hundreds of under-employed attorneys and an extremely left-winged leadership. They started looking for obscure causes to champion and in the process became focused on Christianity. Today their goal is to remove “God” from America. The “In God We Trust” removal from coins is only one small example of their anti-Christian position.

The constitution was written in a way to protect the country from becoming a theocracy. The United States is not a theocracy nor is it in danger of becoming one. The ACLU is simply caught up in a frenzy of anti-Christian self-righteousness. They will not rest until there is no “God” left in America. Today instead protecting our rights the ACLU is attacking them. The ACLU has outgrown its usefulness and has become a bigger danger to our rights than any other single organization in America outside of the Al-Qaeda.

I wonder. It would be an ACLU characteristic if any religious symbol was put up. They are pretty consistent with opposing this. But I imagine if, for example, head scarves for Islamic women were banned, they would come it to support the wearing of head scarves.

It seems most religious symbols government's erect are Christian, however so I imagine that's why it seems it's only Christian.

I can't recall a menorah or a Buddha being displayed by a government.

Just a final thought: when they fought so hard to have the 10 Commandments removed, not only were they removing a Christian symbol but a Jewish one, too.

The ACLU files suit when public money is used to promote a particular religion. Since the US is predominantly christian, most of the time the symbol involved will be christian. Give me an example of a city hall anywhere in the country that has erected a crescent and star for Ramadan.

If government money was used to place religious symbols of ANY faith on government property, then the ACLU would (rightly) oppose it. However since it seems to be theocratic christians who constantly try to subvert the constitution, while denying any other faiths equal time, it's only logical that a majority of ACLU cases for this kind of thing would involve Judeo-Christian symbols.

The ACLU has been very fair and even-handed in cases defending individual's right to practice religion, including Christians. That suggests that in the cases you are suggesting the ACLU would be equally even-handed.

Lol, as if the slugs who waste government money making thse symbols, then defending them for years, then to remove them and dispose of them would EVER allow a symbol from another religion to be put up! EVER! Now how's the ACLU supposed to sue to have one removed if the slugs who put them up would burn the building they found one in long before the ACLU could get a suit going?

If only all that money could have gone to alleviate poverty, or help the social security program or...

stable question. i think of the main important undertaking right here is that the government has in uncomplicated terms acted in accordance with the needs of the folk it represents. it isn't any longer surely the government's fault that the words, "In God We have faith," is on the money. the government in uncomplicated terms replied to the needs of the folk. in this, i could think of that it may be the voters that the ACLU could would desire to hold in charge. because of the fact the word grew to become into positioned on the charges via standard call for, i think of it may be an extremely unfavourable place for the ACLU to absorb attempting to get rid of the expression. they could would desire to bear public disfavor and this could carry approximately an important loss of help for them. It merely would not seem as though a conflict they might win and whether they did win, the wear they could do to their very very own enterprise could be to the variety of degree that they might no longer recuperate. merely my ideas.

Yes. Mostly they target government things that have the word "god" in/on them. Last I checked, almost every religion has a God. I think it seems that Christians are targeted more because Christianity is the vast majority of religious influence in the US.

The ACLU has defended the rights of Christians on numerous occasions. A web-search can prove this. Here's an article about the ACLU supporting a student's right to sing "Awesome God" in school: http://www.aclu.org/religion/schools/27673prs20061212.html

Don't believe so....We have to keep giving up our rights and traditions because we are too busy tending to the rights of everyone else. We are expected to give up what this country was founded on so we don't step on the toes of others. I think it is a shame that we are losing the freedom to express our religion that we fought so hard to obtain.

The ACLU is a joke. The only people they stick up for are blacks. They are nothing but a bunch of racist fascists.
