I just finished reading The Painted Veil by Maugham and Tryst by Elswyth Thane. They are both English authors who write around the same time. Can anyone recommend another author or some books from that time period and have the same style as Tryst and the Painted Veil which are romantic in nature, but not necessarily romance novels?

I recommend _A Passage to India_ by E.M. Forster. A beautifully written classic!

A Passage to India (1924) is a novel by E. M. Forster set against the backdrop of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement in the 1920s. It was selected as one of the 100 great works of English literature by the Modern Library.

I havent read that book so i cant make any recommendations but Amazon has a great search feature that allows you to look at similar books. You can then read summaries and reader reviews of those books to see if its what you might be interested in. You dont have to buy your books from Amazon but their search features are excellent. Heres the link to the books similar to the Painted Veil:

I'm not sure what time frame that is, but since JC recommended Jane Austen I'll recommend 'Wives and Daughters' by Elizabeth Gaskell. She wrote a few years after Austen.

Try Thackeray's Vanity Fair or Wharton's House of Mirth.
