For good, free and recommended security programs, please go here
http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/219333/an/0/page/0#219333
I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).
If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.
If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.
Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.

You'll probably hear all kinds of recommendations on what the "best" program is. The best program is the one that runs the best on your machine. Every system is different, different settings, different software. An AV that runs great on one machine may cause another to run slowly or even crash depending on the other software you have installed. The only way to truly tell what is best for you is to find a few good programs and try them out for yourself.
Having said that, there are a few well known sites within the security community that have an excellent reputation for testing AVs and anti-spyware programs.
http://www.av-comparatives.org/
This first link is for AVs. Click on "Comparatives" in the left column, then choose the latest tests:
" On-demand comparative " is a test of detection by signature, the oldest and most common form of detection used by AVs.
"Retrospective/ProActive Test" is a test of heuristic capabilities of AVs. Heuristics is a rules based detection method that looks at the behavior of programs and processes instead of checking their signature. This is important because with so many new types of malware being released (viruses, trojans), your computer may get attacked by a virus or trojan before your AV company has had a chance to send you the latest signature updates. Example: Virus "A" might get released early on a Wednesday morning, by the time the AV companies get a sample of the virus, and release an update to protect you from it, you may have already been INFECTED with the virus. You therefore need another method of testing for viruses. Heuristics addrfesses this problem. Although it's still relatively new, it's proving to be an effective method. By the way it isn't necessary to get caught up in all the percentage numbers on the test results, just look for an AV that has gotten a rating of "Advanced+" or at least "Advanced". Also from personal experience and from the security forums I go to, the two paid AVs that are getting the best reviews are currently Kaspersky and Nod32. The two free AVs that are getting great reviews are AVG and Avira.
As far as anti-spyware (if you're interested) here's a very trusted source. You can check out programs recommended by security experts. Just click on "Recommended Programs" on the top of the page.
http://spywarewarrior.com/asw-features.htm
But, once again, download a few and try them out for yourself. Before you install them I would set a restore point using XP's System Restore (if you're not sure how to do this, you can go to "Help and Support" on your Start menu), or create a backup with any third party backup software you may have. That way you can always roll your system back to the restore point if one of the programs reacts badly with your computer.
Good Luck

Why not use the free software available which work just as well if not better than some paid for versions?
There's "spybot s&d" one of the best anti-spyware progs around.
AVG anti-virus is very good and I've never been infected with a virus since I've been using it (3 yrs).
CCleaner is good at fixing errors & helping you to delete nasty things.

I have McAfee and I recommend it to everyone I know. No anti virus program will check for computer "errors", what they do check for are viruses. If you are concerned with those pesky advertising data miners, that make your machine run so slow, try Ad-Aware, it's free and works well.

If you are looking for a good anti-virus, then purchase Kaspersky or BitDefender. But I don't think they come with utilities. For system optimisation, you can get System Mechanic 7, the best one out there.
