This completely depends on how much the hacker took care of his own butt. If they were jumping through proxy servers at a fast rate then you might have to spend thousands of dollars for a high level computer security expert to track them down. Also what ID did they break? I have spent the time to track down several attempted break-ins to my network and general come up with a wireless hot-spot as the orgination point.

Unless they have cost you alot (and I mean over $100,000) then you probably would just be wasting your time to try to track it. Instead you could always file a police report and see what they could do.

Usually.
There is decent software from Norton's NIS which logs the intruding IP address. And if you act quickly enough, you can do an nslookup. However, some if not most mask their IP. Trace route will do more. However, some software , freely available, can track down hackers to ISP, even the ZIP .... its there, just a matter of how much you want to spend.

One possible way to get at least a hint is through your firewall. It just may be your only shot. Your firewall may have logged a list of intrusion attempts. Even if you get a IP, it is very possible it is not the IP of the hackers machine.

Good luck.

If you're refering to a hacker that cracked and stole your Yahoo account, there's no way to do that. You'd need to know EXACTLY when it happened. To the second.
