My GFs 38 year old brother refuses to get a job.He lives in the guest room of her house. There is nothing wrong with him, as a matter of fact he is quite smart. Everyone who knows him expresses their lack of respect for his refusal to work.He asked the question"What difference does it make if I work or not?" and "So what,if I got a job at McDonalds or something, people would respect me?". I had trouble answering him with a 'strong' argument.

So, he is a smart lazy bum that takes advantage of his sister. And she lets him. Hmmm and he wants to know why he gets no respect? Well, for starters you have to EARN respect. It isn't handed to you. And since all he does is NOTHING....connect the dots.

There is respect in having a job at McDonalds and Burger King and Taco Bell. Those folks work long, hard hours for little pay. Which is 10 times more than he even tries to do. You don't need to argue with this bum. And she needs to quit babying him...What is he going to do if you marry her and want the house to yourselves? He needs to grow up and move on.

Your brothher and my nephew deserve no respect. They are moochers. My nephew has a college degree and he also graduated from the Fire Academy and is a paramedic. He doesn't work either. Sleeps till noon, then watches TV. Like your brother , he is worthless ... nothing more than a user. We keep telling him that if he doesn't start paying something into the system now ( Social Security), he won't get anything from the system when he is older and cannot work. Also, he has no insurance. I've told him if he gets sick and goes into the hospital, I surely will not give him a dime. And that's not just an empty threat.

I work hard for what I have and to get by. This asshat is either leaching off the system or someone else to support him. He is a clown and needs to get into gear and get a job like a responisible person. Doesn't he have any pride, does he not want to own things like a car, or a home? Does his sister give him money as an reward for taking the garbage out?

What a loser, my 16 yr old sister is more responisble than this guy is. Stop being a loser and get a job, stop being a burden on people

I respect someone who works in a fast food restaurant 1000 times more than someone who refuses to work because they are simply lazy. Imagine a world where everybody took the view that it was their right not to work.

Nothing would ever get built, there would be no public services, no hospitals, no doctors, no law enforcement, no amenities, no roads, no goods, no shopping malls, no transport, no communication links (no TV radio or PCs!) no crops would get farmed, no livestock reared. In short we would all live in caves and scrape around for food. Disease and crime would be rife and it would be a barren, stone age type existence. That is why people do not respect someone who is, as you say, smart, able bodied and capable of working.

Don't bother trying to convince him...he's smart enough to be using your girlfriend for more than just shelter 'cause I am making the assumption here that she is feeding him too or else how is he surviving so long without work or income?

It's time to turn him loose and he'll soon see the difference, the strongest arguement it self support, which he cannot do while he is mooching...he won't see it until he's forced to support himself. I know that sounds harsh, but he need's to learn the hard way it would seem....
