As one of the proudest Southerners y'all will ever meet, I am curious to know what people think of Southerners. Ignorancy, racism, and slower ways of life exist all over the world, not just the South. And to clear up a little common misunderstanding, the South had all rights to suceed from the United States and form their own country. Even Abraham Lincoln stated in 1847 on the floor of Congress "Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable, a most sacred right, a right which we hope and believe is to liberate the world."
The Declaration of Independence backs up that right by saying: "Whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to abolish it, and to institute a new government."
I am very proud of my heritage and my Southern culture. I am very tired, though, of the way we are stereotyped.

I have lived in the south for 2 1/2 years now. Southerners are very nice people. It's funny though, they will always say "Bless her heart" before they say something bad about someone though.

Good people, especially since so many of them are my relatives! I got family all over this great country, and yes, we have our regional differences, but we're all family. So from chilly upstate New York, here's a shout out to those folks in Virginia, where me Irish ancestor landed back before there was a USA, Kentucky, California, Oklahoma, Texas, Florida, Utah, Arizona, Louisiana and all the rest. USA! USA! USA! Hooah!

Most are friendly, down-to-earth, fun-loving & tolerant. Also independent & strong-minded, principled, & no more inbred than the rest of the country. In case you're wondering, I'm Southern born & bred. Don't bother trying to change us, it's a state of mind the rest of y'all just can't understand.

If you are talking about Americans from the southern states, I should say I am highly impressed by two southerners: author Shelby Foote (R.I.P.), and the Yahoo Answers fave Southron_98.

I lived most of my life in the north, but now live here in the south. I find that southerners are very polite and the men are gentlemen that open doors for you, and say, yes mam. I'm like it here, but miss my old friends.

My father and step mother are from the south. While they would not be a judge of the community as a whole, I know that their lives are simple and peacefull. When I think of our visits to see them I do think of a quieter and more peacefull way of life. But I'm sure that wouldn't stand true for all.

Southerners are so friendly. They talk to anyone...calling them sweetie, darling and they traditionally do a lot of blessings on the heart...("OH Bless her heart!") They look at people, smile and hug more than traditional northerners.
However, they are more superstitious and fearful and they vote on those superstitions and fears. While they live in the "Bible Belt"...divorce and crime rates are higher there than in the more liberal states. I wonder why that is?

I've never held any particular feelings about southerners as a whole, though I do see the area as less developed. There are some rather uneducated groups within the south as well.
As for "Southerners", no opinions.
Oh, but I f'ing hate Texas.

I may be wrong-but they make me laugh every time. They are inbred and you can tell. It's like the Hasidic Jews too, you can tell a them a mile away, they all look alike (red head-mostly)
Sorry if I offended anyone, but opinion of northerner may not count to southerner. Don't take it personal. They open their mouth and the ignorance just falls out, it's gotta be the inbreeding. I don't know.
Redneck does not even begin to describe it. They are fun people though.
