I've been told not to guess answers on the SAT if I'm not sure about one. I know each correct answer is scored as one point while each incorrect answer takes off 1/4 point. I don't know if I'm being stupid, but why not guess? Why is leaving it blank a better choice? Do they really not take points off for having a blank answer?

You shouldn't guess if you have no idea. If you can narrow it down to 2 or 3 answers, guess. They give 1 point for every correct answer, take away 1/4 point for every wrong answer, and don't take away anything for blank answers. If you can't eliminate at least one answer choice, move on.

The only section you should answer all the questions in is the math section with student formulated answers or whatever its called. Basically, it's the math section where you don't have any multiple choice questions, you write and grid the answers yourself. Try not to leave any blank on that section because they don't take any points away on it. It's kinda like extra credit, you get points for getting it right, but no points are subtracted for getting it wrong.

if you were to guess on everything, you would get about 1 in 4 answers correct just through sheer luck. but you would get the rest wrong, and the wrong answer penalty would get rid of the points you gained for the right ones.

It IS good to guess if you can narrow down the answers. If you know two of the answers must be wrong, then guess from the remaining possible right anwers. the wrong answer penalty wont hurt you here because you would get 1 of ever 2 correct through luck, and the positive points would more than cancel out the penalty.
