I heard it was based on The Stand by Stephen King but that didn't make much sense. Any ideas?

Yes, you are half correct. The creators of the show did not base it on any one book. However, they have borrowed some creative concepts from a variety of literature sources. Of special note is Stephen King, who is a personal friend of the creators, and is rumored to have consulted with them on plot lines, and contributed props as "insider jokes". Some of this is discused in a blog I like at http://lost-spoilers-blog.blogspot.com/ . For example the opening sequence of Season 3 is a renowned tribute to their friend and colleague Stephen King, in which different versions of his books are held by the participants in a book group - moments before the plane crashes, bringing Jack, Kate and the other Lost survivors to the island.

Not based on a book but somebody did write a book last year placing themselves on the island.

Not Stephen King.

The show was created by J. J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof, who is now the head writer, and is filmed primarily on location in Hawaii.

I don't know if it is or not, but even if it is, it's definitely NOT The Stand. I've read that book so many times I know everyone personally, and would have recognized it immediately.
