I think the problem is that mum is no longer home to cook all day, so fast, pre-packaged meals seem to be the answer but are lacking in nutrition. And they watch too much TV and the commercials make the pizzas and burgers look sooo appetizing.
It isn't impossible to learn to cook whole foods without dedicating your entire life to it, but it does take some organization.
As to why people (not just Americans, again) *overeat*--a lot of it is stress and emotional detachment. The breakdown of the family, the lack of time for others, and the lack of true, solid cultivation of friendships and community relationships with neighbours, etc. creates a large emotional hole...so many people are trying to fill that need by "comfort eating"--they fill the mouth in the attempt to fill the soul. I've watched my sister do this and it's tragic. She can't admit she isn't happy...she just eats more junk.
Hey, be honest-- Britain isn't much better off. There's a whole govt programme about childhood obesity now--and you know how long it takes Blair to tumble to reality!

I am an American, and here's what I think. You're right. There are an extreme amount of fat people over here. Fortunately, I am not one of them. But, the ratio here is about 6 out of 10 people are overweight. I have a theory as to why.
Are you familiar with the Roswell incident? It was reported that space aliens landed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1948. Well, these space aliens have been very busy fattening up Americans for decades. Soon another space ship will arrive and start harvesting these plump humans. They will be taken away to another galaxy and served as the entree in alien restaurants across the universe.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but here is part of the problem. A person in America can often feed their entire family for $10.00 at most fast food restaurants. To feed them a healthy meal may cost 5x that amount. Many children raised in poverty are raised eating unhealthy foods because that is their only option. Science has proven that this has a lasting effect on their food choice as adults. As for the children raised with a silver spoon in their mouth, there is no excuse.

I agree we eat because we can simple as that. But Ill agree some of use Americans eat to excess overeating is an addiction like anything else. Being an American you don't realise how much we overeat until you travel elsewhere. I had a woman in France once ask me why our women are so fat?? And its true compared to other nations they are but so are the men. Being in the military I work out a lot to keep my weight down because like all Americans, I Love Food! But dam there seem to be some angry jealous responders to this question!! Ive been to England also and I think the main reason you all are so skinny is that your food is so bad no one wants to eat it. Can only go so long on grey meat and fish and chips!!

The question has so many correct answers. Competition has led to the super sizing of America. It is cheaper to buy the larger "value" meal. We are taught as children to clear our plates. Fried fast food keeps service quick. Busy schedules make a stop at the buffet or drive thru easier. I have seen my share of fat Brits so the problem is not confined to America.

The media has taught them to eat as all these millions of adds on tele about JUNCK whoppers and burgers then moves on to crisps and choclate and all the lovely food shows ....

BUT this is not true to all americans i say but mabye most...

I eat because it is so good and seem to be hungry all the time, I'm not obese or overweight either. I can eat more than a kid almost twice my size. Mmmmm!!

Agree - couldn't believe the size of the portions in America when we went there a few years ago. Plus every other person we saw in New York seemed to be a fatty!

Americans eat so much because we are hungry people.
Our parents overfed us as kids and we got to the habit of eating in large portions. We eat lots of food because we love the feeling of being full. BTW, I don't eat when I am sad. I am a happy american who loves life.
