The first guy to do it solo was Joshua Sloan. (late 1890's more or less). His book 'Sailing around the World Alone' is a classic.

Not sure about the first to captain a crew around the world. It could be Magellan. He was the first to get around the tip of South America in the early 1600's, I assume he would have just kept going after that!

Alone was Joshua Slocum but Adm. Cook was the first to actually do it as part of an organised expedition.l

Well, not Madgellan. I think he got eaten in the Philippines. But the eight or nine members of his crew who DID make it - they'd be first.
