Its not black continent.
It was the DARK CONTINENT( till 20th century).

It was a slang used by the earlier European explorers and settlers in the 15-16 th century since it was uncivilized nomadic tribes,dense dark forests, majority ***** population etc.

Africa as a whole(especially countries like South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria,Kenya,etc) has progressed a lot from those times....now not regarded as the dark continent

It used to be called the dark continent. And it was considered such because at that time very little was known by the Europeans about Africa. Dark basically meant mysterious in that case.
