Why do americans insist upon forcing infants to pledge allegiance to the american flag, when they cant possibly comprahend what it stands for. You can only be proud of your country when you know its culture , history and influence when you grow up, Forcing little children to pledge allegiance is sickining and cruel, not to mention it contributes to americans growing up being ignorant of their nation becuase they think being proud of your country is automatic and you never qeustion its diplomacy. geeeez

What happens if these kids refuse, are they arrested and branded a communist (probably not surprising given how ignorant and parnoid americans are)

I don't know about sickening and cruel, but it is a bit premature. I remember saying the pledge every morning in school and never had a clue of what it meant.
We also sang My Country 'Tis of Thee every day. I always thought the line -of thee i sing- said of the icing... It just made me want cake.

why baptize infants into religion? you learn the pledge then as you grow older and become educated in school you learn the meaning. however what is wrong with being proud of your country? i served my country and am proud of it every day. i don't always agree with everything but i am PROUD to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. the U.S. has been criticized by the worldwide community over the years but really who else is going to take an active role worldwide against terrorism, despots, warlords, nuclear arms in the hands of unstable "leaders"? the U.N.? when aid is sent, either supplies/money/troops, the U.S. sends the vast majority. and before you give me that age old civilization drivel, the U.S. has gone from a colony to the last remaining superpower, world police, benefactor in less then 300 years.

You must be from the middle east. I can't imagine anyone else being so ignorant. We pledge our allegience to our flag the same as you recite whatever sermon you do everyday. It's not mean, and it teaches respect for those who have lost their lives defending our country. We don't force anyone to do anything in America. This is the land of the free and that means free-choice. We always allow our children to learn and search information for the truth. We don't forcefeed information that we want them to only know about. That is how your country works. Before opening your big mouth next time, take a trip to America and see how things work first.

Children are not required to pledge allegiance to the flag, and are not punished if they refuse. The pledge is taught in elementary schools, where it is explained to them. They do not recite it in ignorance. They know why and for what reason it is recited. If anything it adds to their knowledge of our country. It is the Official National Pledge, something that is required to be recited by any immigrant wishing to become a citizen. Why do you comment, so passionately, on something that you know absolutely nothing about? You are a moron.

Jeez Louise, what's got your knickers all in a twist? In my sixty-plus years paying very close attention to public schools in these United States - attending them as a youngster in several different states and raising six kids who've graduated from public schools, I have NEVER encountered a school that FORCED pupils to recite the Pledge. It was ALWAYS voluntary.

In addition, every last one of them taught what the flag stands for from the get-go, presenting a minimum of information to the youngest pupils and increasing the amount and level of sophistication of that information as the children grew older and more capable of reason and understanding.

To those who'd say "it's just a rag" I say my great-great grandfather gave his life for that flag during the American Civil War. His great, great grandfather fought under that flag in the War of 1812. My grandfather served in World War One, my father in World War Two, earning a Purple Heart due to wounds received in battle. I served as a medical corpsman in the VietNam war under that flag, and my oldest daughter and youngest son are serving right now under that flag, she as a drill sergeant and he as a military policeman. And we all believe it's rather important that America's children - all of them - know why we do that and how much that flag means to us and to them. You got a problem with that?
